The minor is based on a broad, cross-disciplinary philosophy of leadership. The short-term goal is to prepare students for leadership roles and responsibilities on campus, in careers, community and family. The long-term goal is to positively transform individuals, organizations, communities (both locally and globally), fields (professions and disciplines), and systems (both culture and paradigms). The minor consists of a focused core curriculum (12 credits) consisting of courses that cover leadership theories, applications, leadership skills, and synthesis through applied and experiential learning. The minor is also flexible with its supporting interdisciplinary curriculum of electives (9 credits) being selected from a variety disciplines with a leadership focus.
* No more than 6 credit hours total of independent study, internship, practica, or workshop may be applied toward the Leadership Studies Minor. Course Offerings - Lower DivisionLEAD 101 FOUNDATIONS OF LEADERSHIP (3-0-3)(F/S). Students are introduced to basic leadership theory, historical paradigms, and concepts. Emphasis will be placed on personal leadership development through the exploration of one��s leadership identity, values, and ethics; understanding of others through multicultural appreciation; and fostering active citizenship through community-based projects. LEAD 201 APPLIED LEADERSHIP (3-0-3)(F/S). Students will apply leadership principles and enhance their leadership skills. Emphasis will be placed on group leadership development through the exploration of different leadership styles and assessment of personal leadership competencies; refinement of effective communication skills and ethics; understanding of group processes; and refinement of group leadership competencies. A community-based project will facilitate the practice of leadership. PREREQ: LEAD 101. Course Offerings - Upper DivisionLEAD 301 CURRENT ISSUES IN LEADERSHIP (3-0-3)(S). Current trends and issues in leadership are addressed specifically relating to education, business/industry, government, non-profits, and more. Emphasis will be placed on analyzing professional ethics. Students have the opportunity to participate in experiential learning supplemented by selected readings and dialogues with University and local community leaders. PREREQ: LEAD 101 and LEAD 201. LEAD 493 INTERNSHIP IN LEADERSHIP STUDIES (V-V-3)(F/S). Upper division students will select an internship program related to their discipline in consultation with the program advisor and internship coordinator. Internships provide real-world experience for students to practice leadership in a variety of settings in the community or on campus. Students must complete a minimum of 50 hours of work per credit of internship. They must also attend a weekly Internship Seminar. Pass/Fail. PREREQ: Upper division Leadership Studies Minor student, LEAD 101, LEAD 201, and PERM/INST. LEAD 495 SENIOR CAPSTONE IN LEADERSHIP STUDIES (3-0-3)(S). Senior-level students will synthesize and analyze their leadership knowledge, skills and experiences through a leadership problem-based dissertation, a comprehensive exam, and a portfolio development and review. PREREQ: Senior-level Leadership Studies Minor student, LEAD 101, LEAD 201, LEAD 493, and PERM/INST. LEAD 496 INDEPENDENT STUDY IN LEADERSHIP (Variable Credit)(F/S). This is an opportunity for students to earn academic credit outside of the established curriculum. Curriculum depends on the shared interest of the student and the instructor on a specific leadership topic. Enrollment is contingent on a voluntary commitment to the project by both parties. PREREQ: Upper division Leadership Studies Minor student, LEAD 101, LEAD 201, and PERM/INST. Course Offerings - ElectivesAlready existing Leadership Studies courses within other major disciplines will serve as electives to fulfill the 9-credit elective requirement for the minor. These elective courses are divided into two categories: General Electives and Special Electives. Special Leadership Studies elective courses are only for students affiliated with a specific major, whereas, General Leadership Studies elective courses can be taken by any student regardless of their major. Students can fulfill their 9 elective credits for the minor by taking all general elective courses or by taking no more than 6 credits of special elective courses and the remaining 3 credits in general elective courses.
